Join or Die

Dear Harrington Park Families,

I hope this email finds you well as we sprint toward the end of the year!

Two weeks from today on Tuesday, May 20, we will be hosting this year's final "Coffee and Conversation" event. These events are intended to provide an opportunity for members of the Harrington Park community to come together, informally discuss the ongoing work of the district, and explore ideas important to schools and the lives of students and families.

As part of this Coffee and Conversation, Ms. Comstock and I will be facilitating a discussion around Join or Die, "a film about why you should join a club." The film explores the ideas and career of Robert Putnam, author of Bowling Alone, and looks at the impact of a decline in community connections across America over the past few decades and considers how joining clubs can address some of those issues. There are interesting connections between Putnam's ideas and those discussed in Jonathan Haidt's The Anxious Generation and we selected this film as a way to continue the conversation about the ideas raised in The Anxious Generation. Join or Die is available to stream on Netflix and the trailer for the film can be viewed here.

On May 20 there will be two Coffee and Conversation sessions:

  • 8:45 - 10:00 AM at the Community Church

  • 7:00 - 8:15 PM at Harrington Park School.

If you plan on attending one of these sessions, please RSVP here. We are looking forward to the conversation and hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

Sean Conlon, Superintendent of The Harrington Park School District
