2019 CALENDAR

Current Record: 9-3-0 (Win-Loss-Draw)

Wed. 9/18 WIN 6-0 vs. Northvale

Congratulations to our Spartan soccer team for opening the season with a win against Northvale in front of an outstanding home crowd! Caleb Bae routinely created scoring chances, leading the way for 2 goals by Tommy Ramos and Goran Saric, and 1 goal each from Lucas Cohen and Heewon Kiim. Starting defenders Ally Sheldon, Tyler Dolan, Owen McAuley, Mia Derrico and goalie Nico Ottomanelli preserved the shutout by locking down the center of the field and forcing the Eagles away from net. Way to go, HP! Special kudos to Nico Ottomanelli, Tommy Ramos, Owen McAuley and Mia Derrico for earning their first Spartan starts during today's game.

Thurs. 9/19 WIN 6-2 vs. Haworth
Today our Spartan soccer team had their most impressive win since 2017, as they battled back from an early 2 goal deficit and beat last year’s runner-up Haworth by a final score of 6-2! Goran Saric was a monster among men on the field, leading the comeback with 4 goals in the game (6 goals for the season)! Caleb Bae scored the go-ahead goal (1st goal of the season) with less than a minute left in the first half. Heewon Kiim took one for the team on defense, then minutes later ran down the field to score an insurance goal (2 goals this season) that sealed the victory. Sara Buddha impressed defensively, and fellow defenders Ally Sheldon and Owen McAuley played all 60 minutes of the game to preserve the victory. What an incredible win, HP — Way to make Spartan Nation proud!!

Wed. 9/25 WIN 3-2 vs. Closter
The 1st half of Wednesday’s game against Closter wasn’t pretty, but our Spartan soccer team dominated possession during the 2nd half and avenged last year’s playoff loss with a 3-2 win! Caleb Bae scored a magnificent goal (his 2nd of the season) during the 1st half, and Goran Saric added 2 more goals to his team-leading scoring tally (8 goals this season) — including the game winner midway through the 2nd half! Kudos also to Ben Johnson for earning his first career HP start on Wednesday and for playing multiple positions throughout the game.

Thurs. 9/26 WIN 5-0 vs. Norwood
On Thursday, our Spartan soccer team toughed it out through the cold rain and earned their first win against Norwood in over a year! Goran Saric capped off his second hat trick (11 goals this season) of the season with a cheeky goal off of a corner kick. Caleb Bae added two more goals (4 goals this season) to his scoring tally, and HP won by a final score of 5-0. Kudos to Lilly Mangano, Will Poggi, Sophia Katechis, and Eva Saric for making the most of their minutes off the bench and executing some impressive runs to goal yesterday.

Tues. 10/1 WIN 3-2 vs. Old Tappan
Congratulations to our Spartan soccer team for another comeback win yesterday, this time by a score of 3-2 against OT! This was HP soccer’s first win against OT since the 2016 championship game, and the first career win that our current 8th graders have been able to pick up against our arch rivals. It was a 7th grader though who was the hero of the day, as Tommy Ramos scored two goals during the 2nd half — the game-tying goal 2 minutes into the 2nd half, and then the game winner with only 5 minutes left to play (3 goals this season). Caleb Bae set up a first half goal for Goran Saric (12th goal of the season), who receives credit for a unique goal directly off a throw-in. All of yesterday’s players did a great job of controlling possession and counter-pressing deep in OT’s defensive zone. Way to go, soccer team!

Mon. 10/7 WIN 4-1 vs. Haworth
Tommy Ramos scored a hat trick (6 goals this season) during Monday’s game against Haworth and led our team to a 4-1 victory! Will Poggi delivered a birthday gift to Goran Saric when Will drew a foul in the box, thereby setting Goran up for a penalty kick goal (13th goal of the season). Caleb Bae and Mia Derrico created countless opportunities all game, and defenders Tyler Dolan, Heewon Kiim, Ally Sheldon and Justin Ahn routinely denied Haworth’s scoring chances — This combination of strong midfield and defensive play allowed HP to control the tempo of the game from whistle to whistle. Great team win, HP!

Tues. 10/15 WIN 3-1 vs. Closter
Mia Derrico had her best game of the season, dominating the middle lane and creating countless opportunities for her teammates. Lucas Cohen scored less than 2 minutes into the game, and Goran Saric scored the game winner 20 minutes later (14 goals this season). Owen McAuley perfectly read a 2nd half corner kick deflection to score the insurance goal (1st goal of the season), as he and Justin Ahn were superb at outside back. Great win, team!

Thurs. 10/17 WIN 4-1 vs. Norwood
Tommy Ramos scored two goals (8 goals this season) to lead our undefeated Spartans to a 4-1 win! Goran Saric extended his team-leading scoring tally with a penalty kick goal (15th goal of the season), and Will Poggi scored his first career HP goal to seal the victory! Heewon Kiim and Tyler Dolan put forth tremendous defensive efforts in order to hold back the Norwood offense. All of our 7th and 8th graders did an outstanding job to earn the win on Thursday despite missing 5 players who were on the Stokes trip. Way to go, HP!

Mon. 10/21 LOSS 1-0 vs. Old Tappan
Our Spartan soccer team suffered their first defeat of the season yesterday by a score of 1-0 at Old Tappan. Despite the result, the team should keep their heads held high because they outplayed OT for most of the game but just couldn’t find the back of the net.

Tues. 10/22 LOSS 2-1 vs. Demarest
After finding out that the soccer team had been awarded the #1 seed in the playoffs no matter the result of yesterday’s game, Coach Conn chose to try new tactics in yesterday’s game and provide meaningful minutes to all of his players rather than battle tooth and nail for the win. Although they lost 2-1 against Demarest, it was a valuable learning experience for the team and a fun afternoon for our departing 8th graders — One of their final games on our home field.

*PLAYOFFS 1ST ROUND BYE (#1 SEED) *

Tues. 10/29: SEMIFINALS -- WIN 5-3 vs. Closter

A hat trick by Tommy Ramos (11 goals this season) powered the team to victory, and Goran Saric scored the other 2 goals (17 goals this season) to secure the win. Ben Johnson played his best half of the season yesterday afternoon, as he continuously flustered Closter’s defense throughout the 2nd half with constant pressure, resulting in a 3-goal 2nd half outburst for our Spartans. Caleb Bae delivered a SportsCenter-worthy assist to Tommy for his 2nd goal, making a perfect cross into the box right to Tommy’s foot for a goal off the volley. It is effort like this that will be needed by our players in order to win the championship!

Mon. 11/4: FINALS -- LOSS 2-0 vs. Demarest
Although our Spartan soccer team lost against Demarest in the finals, we’d like to congratulate the team on an incredible season! We’d like to give a special shout-out to the following 8th graders: Goran Saric for being the team’s leading scorer (17 goals); Caleb Bae for being the team’s top playmaker; Nico Ottomanelli for his outstanding saves; and to Heewon Kiim, Tyler Dolan and Ally Sheldon for being the heart and soul of our defense. Kudos to all the players for making our community proud this season — We look forward to watching our 8th graders continue their careers in high school, and we can’t wait to see our current 6th and 7th graders take the field again next year!
